Local HR consultant sees local job opportunities -- Macau Daily Times Interview with MSS Recruitment

Local HR consultant sees local job opportunities

Jiji Tu has been the managing director of MSS Recruitment company since 2008. She earned her Masters  in human resources management and industrial relations at the University of Sydney. “I also worked in Sydney and then Singapore for three and a half years before I got scouted for a job in Macau,” she told the Macau Daily Times.
Her approach to business development has been reflected in her positions as regional sales director as well as business development manager in Sydney. Her responsibilities included playing a strategic role in establishing and leading the Singapore office and SEA sales team.
After working for a company in the same area Jiji decided to start her own business in recruitment. MSS Recruitment is a recruitment and outsourcing company that is part of the MSS Group. They provide recruitment, visa service,payroll/finance outsourcing and business support to companies operating in Macau.
“I also have a few partners and started a recruitment firm together with them, and the main reason I did that is because Macau is a less mature market with a lot of opportunities. There are not  many professional human resources agencies.”
“The Macau job market is still relatively good for many reasons. For example, we know that the unemployment rate has increased only slightly, but a lot of infrastructures are being built in Macau which also give a great opportunity platform for future candidates.”
She acknowledges that the government has a strong policy towards visas, and there is also a great need for local employees. “We have worked with clients that are only interested in fresh graduates.  We also train them and hire mostly for middle management.”
However, they are recruiting for companies that have already committed investment and projects in 2009. Mega projects like CoD, Hyatt,  and L'Arc will open on time in 2009 and they will create approximately 10,000 job opportunities. In addition, more job opportunities will be created by businesses associated with or supporting these projects such as retail, entertainment and subcontracting groups.
“The government's commitment to nearly 100 public work projects in 2009 will also create 9,100 jobs, according to a recent announcement. The massive layoffs recently affecting locals have partially contributed to the government's tightening up on work permits and quotas. As a result, I foresee qualified and skilled locals especially in finance, HR and business support, sales and retail will be in high demand as companies have to limit their selection among local candidates pool. Most people being laid off are related to the suspension of Cotai construction and hotel projects and this comprises of local, overseas, skilled and non-skilled employees at all levels”.
